Sometimes your pattern tells you to increase evenly and having to put your needles down and start calculating is not a thing most of us are eager to do. I have saved you some trouble and made this simple calculator. Just enter the number of stitches you have and the number of stitches you want to increase and the calculator will do the math for you.

Increase evenly across a round: (k14, m1) repeat 4 times.
Increase evenly across a row (balanced increase): k7, (m1, k14) repeat 3 times, m1, k7.
Abbreviations
k = Knit
m1 = Make one. Pick up the bar between the stitch you knit and the one you’re about to knit, bringing the needle from front to back. Then knit into the back of the stitch.

It says I can’t increase more than half the stitches on my needle. My pattern instructs to increase 32 stitches evenly over 42 stitches. Seems impossible!
Well, I still didn’t get it quite right, I got either 121 or 123 stitches. I went with the 123 and knit the first two together. Close enough!

I’m a little confused with the direction. I have 101 stitches and need to inc by 21, giving 122 stitches. I’m supposed to K3, (m1,k4) two times, the (m1, k5) 16 times, (m1,k4) two times, and m1, k2. But I only wind up with 10 repeats, not 16. Am I not supposed to count the bar and read 5 knits between repeats, or are there 6 knits between repeats, counting the bar? The directions don’t seem to work.
Hi Lisa! You are supposed to knit 3, lift the bar and knit it, knit 4, lift the bar and knit it, knit 4 and so on. Your work has a total of 3+4*2+5*16+4*2+2=101 stitches before the increases and you increase 2+16+2+1=21 stitches. I hope this helped. -Ida
