This hat is knitted bottom-up with super bulky yarn and big needles. The pattern is beginner-friendly.

Choose a size with some negative ease (the hat circumference should be 1-2″ [2-5 cm] smaller than the head circumference).

Sample hat is size M and shown on 21.6″ [55 cm] head.

Gauge

9 sts and 14 rows per 4″ inches (10cm) with bigger needles in stockinette after blocking.

Recommended Needles

US 11 20″ [8mm 50cm] and US 15 20″ [10mm 50cm] or longer circular needles or a set of double-pointed needles.

Adjust needle size to obtain the correct gauge.

Yarn

The hat on the images is knitted with super bulky single ply 100% wool Novita Hygge wool (66 yards / 60 meters / 100g). For sizes S and M, you need two 100g skeins and for size L you need 3 skeins. This amount should be enough for making the pompom as well.

Pattern

Knitting abbreviations used in this pattern you can find here.

With smaller needles CO 44 (48) 52 sts. Sample uses long-tail cast on. Work 4.5 (5) 5.5″ [12 (13) 14 cm] or desired length of ribbing *(k1, p1) repeat from * to beginning of round. Change to bigger needles and work in stockinette until your work measures 8 (8.5) 9″ [20 (21) 22 cm] or 3.5″ [9 cm] less than desired length.

Crown decreases

  • Size S only: (k9, k2tog) repeat 4 times. A total of 40 sts. K one round.
  • Size L only: (k11, k2tog) repeat 4 times. A total of 48 sts. K one round.
  • Sizes M and L only: *(k4, k2tog), repeat from * to beginning of round. A total of 40 sts. Knit 1 round.

From here on decreases are the same for all sizes.

  • Round 1: *(k3, k2tog), repeat from * to beginning of round.
  • A total of 32 sts.
  • Knit 1 round.
  • Round 2: *(k2, k2tog), repeat from * to beginning of round.
  • A total of 24 sts.
  • Knit 1 round.
  • Round 3: *(k1, k2tog), repeat from * to beginning of round.
  • A total of 16 sts.
  • Knit 1 round.
  • Round 4: *(k2tog), repeat from * to beginning of round.
  • A total of 8 sts.

Break the yarn. Thread through a tapestry needle and draw through the remaining stitches. Pull tight, through to the wrong side.

Finishing

Following package instructions, make a pompom and attach it to the top of the hat. The pompom attached to the sample hat is approximately 10cm in diameter.  With the help of a wool needle weave in ends.

    Thank you for sharing this pattern. It was very easy to follow. I added a few spins to it and the number of stitches varied based on thickness of the yarn. Loved how they turned out! Haven’t had a chance to add the poms but plan to!
