This hat is knitted bottom-up with super bulky yarn and big needles. The pattern is beginner-friendly.
Choose a size with some negative ease (the hat circumference should be 1-2″ [2-5 cm] smaller than the head circumference).
Sample hat is size M and shown on 21.6″ [55 cm] head.
S (M) L
9 sts and 14 rows per 4″ inches (10cm) with bigger needles in stockinette after blocking.
Wool needle, pompom maker
US 11 20″ [8mm 50cm] and US 15 20″ [10mm 50cm] or longer circular needles or a set of double-pointed needles.
Adjust needle size to obtain the correct gauge.
The hat on the images is knitted with super bulky single ply 100% wool Novita Hygge wool (66 yards / 60 meters / 100g). For sizes S and M, you need two 100g skeins and for size L you need 3 skeins. This amount should be enough for making the pompom as well.

With smaller needles CO 44 (48) 52 sts. Sample uses long-tail cast on. Work 4.5 (5) 5.5″ [12 (13) 14 cm] or desired length of ribbing *(k1, p1) repeat from * to beginning of round. Change to bigger needles and work in stockinette until your work measures 8 (8.5) 9″ [20 (21) 22 cm] or 3.5″ [9 cm] less than desired length.
From here on decreases are the same for all sizes.
Break the yarn. Thread through a tapestry needle and draw through the remaining stitches. Pull tight, through to the wrong side.
Following package instructions, make a pompom and attach it to the top of the hat. The pompom attached to the sample hat is approximately 10cm in diameter. With the help of a wool needle weave in ends.
