Mohair hat

This fuzzy and soft hat is knitted top-down so it’s easy to adjust for different gauges and sizes.

  • Sizes: Toddler, Child, Teenager (Adult S, Adult M, Adult L)
  • Yarn: Fingering weight merino wool held together with lace weight silk mohair yarn

It is always best to choose size based on actual measurements but if you are not able to do that you can choose size based on the labels listed below.

Select size with approximately 2″ [5cm] of negative ease. Measure the head circumference around the widest part of your head, above your ears.

Tapestry needle, 4 stitch markers

Recommended Needles

US2.5 30″ (3mm 80cm) circular needle. Optionally 1 size (0.5 mm) smaller needles for ribbing.

Adjust needle size to obtain the correct gauge.

141, 168, 197 (231, 269, 309) yds [130, 154, 180 (212, 246, 283) m] of fingering weight yarn and 1, 1, 1 (1, 2, 2) skeins of Sandnes garn Tynn Silk Mohair or approximately
129, 153, 179 (211, 245, 281) yds [118, 140, 164 (193, 224, 257) m] of lace weight yarn.

Please note that the yardage may vary if your gauge differs.

Pattern

Knitting abbreviations used in this pattern can be found here.

Hold both strands of yarn together. With Turkish cast-on method CO 12 sts (6 sts / needle).  

Setup round: *(k1, m1r, k2, m1l, pm ) repeat from * to BOR. A total of 20 sts. 

K one round

Increase round: *(sm, k1, m1r, k to marker, m1l) repeat from * to BOR. 8 sts increased.

Increase every other round 7, 8, 9 (10, 11, 12) more times. A total of 84, 92, 100 (108, 116, 124) sts. You can now remove all the markers except the last one that is BOR.

Work in stockinette until your work measures 5, 5.5, 6 (6.5, 7, 7)″ [13, 14, 15 (16, 17, 18) cm].

You can now change to smaller needles if you want your ribbing to be snugger.

Work  4.5, 5, 5.5 (6, 6.5, 7)″ [11.5, 12.5, 13.5 (15, 16.5, 18) cm] of ribbing *(k2, p2) repeat from * to BOR. BO using the tubular bind-off method.

Finishing

Weave in ends and enjoy your hat!
