Antti is a very popular men’s name in Finland and these socks look like something my grandmother could have made for the men in our family. The inspiration for the colorwork motif comes from the traditional Finnish sweater pattern Jussi-paita.
These socks are knitted toe-up.
It is always best to choose a size based on actual measurements but if you are not able to do that you can choose a size based on the labels listed below.
Select size with approximately 0.8″ [2cm] of negative ease. Measure the foot circumference around the ball of the foot.
M, L, XL [56 (60, 64) sts]
Length of cuff and foot can be adjusted.
8 (8.5, 9)″ [ 20 (21.5, 23) cm] around
With smaller needles 28 sts & 36 rows per 4″(10cm) in stockinette after blocking.
With larger needles 28 sts & 36 rows per 4 inches (10cm) in stranded colorwork after blocking.
Tapestry needle
US 1.5 32″ [2.5mm 80cm] or longer circular needles. Adjust needle size to obtain the correct gauge.
For colorwork: US 3 32″ [3.25mm 80cm] or longer circular needles.
Adjust needle size to obtain the correct gauge.
Sample uses light DK-weight wool and nylon blend yarn Novita Nalle.
Or similar amount of DK weight sock yarn 284 yards (260 meters) / 100g
Please note that the yardage may vary if your gauge differs.

With smaller needles and contrasting color CO 8 (8, 8) sts. Divide evenly over 2 needles: 4 (4, 4) sts each needle. The sample uses Turkish cast-on method.
Knit two rounds.
Knit one round.
Now continue in a similar manner and increase 4 stitches evenly every other round 8 (9, 10) more times. A total of 56 (60, 64) sts.

Knit 2 more rows.
Change to bigger needles and work colorwork chart A according to your size starting from row 2. Break CC.
Measure your row gauge of the stockinette section and if it is different than the 36 rows / 4″ / 10cm provided by this pattern use this calculator to determine when you should start your gusset increases. You can also replace the heel with german short row heel or afterthought heel. Otherwise continue as instructed below.
With smaller needles and MC work in stockinette until your sock measures 4.4 (4.9, 5.3)″ [11, (12, 13) cm] less than desired length.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 10 (11, 12) more times. 22 (24, 26) sts increased on Needle 2.
You have now 11 (12, 13) gusset sts on each end of Needle 2 and 28 (30, 32) sts in the middle. A total of 50 (54, 58) sts on Needle 2. While working the short rows the gusset sts are on hold.
K until you are at the beginning of Needle 2. The following rows 1-3 are worked flat on Needle 2 only.
Repeat rows 3 & 4 until the last row you worked was mds, k2, work 6 (6, 6) sts in slipped stitch pattern, k2. Do not turn your work.
On Needle 2 you should now have 11 (12, 13) gusset sts, 9 (10, 11) double sts, 10 (10, 10) regular sts on the right needle and 9 (10, 11) double sts and 11 (12, 13) gusset sts on the left needle.
K to last double st, ssk, turn (k together through the back loop the last double st with the first gusset st on hold.)
Repeat rows 6 & 7 until you have one gusset st left at each end of the Needle 2 (a total of 30 (32, 34) sts on Needle 2).
Next round (RS): sl1, *(k1, sl1 wyib) repeat from * to slipped stitch, ssk, continue working in the round and k all sts on needle 1, k2tog the first two sts on Needle 2, k to end of Needle 2.
You should have a total of 56 (60, 64) sts (28 (30, 32) sts on each needle).
The heel is now finished. Continue working in the round.
Work 3.5″ [9cm] or desired length in stockinette.
Change to bigger needles. Work colorwork chart A starting from row 1. Do not work the last row of the chart. Break MC.
Change back to smaller needles. With CC work 4 rows in stockinette and 3″ [8cm] rows (or desired length) of ribbing *(k1 tbl, p1) repeat from * to beginning of round. BO using some stretchy bind off method. Sample uses the russian bind off.
Weave in ends and block your socks.
